Key Bible Verse: Dear children, let us stop just saying we love each other; let us really show it by our actions (1 John 3:18). Bonus Reading:2 Corinthians 8:915
When police officer Phil Schultz found out last month that his three-year-old daughter had leukemia, he had to squeeze his limited time off from work to be with her. Thanks to fellow officers, time off is no longer a problem for the seven-year force veteran. He has at least 40 extra days coming to him.
While Schultz and his wife, Amy, rotated nights at the hospital to be with daughter Lauren, he watched his vacation and compensatory time melt away. "I was beginning to wonder what I would do when I ran out," Schultz said.
But his partners, led by officers Tom Schamerhorn and Steve Chaterton, would have none of it. Each officer donated four hours, and many offered to give much more comp time, which they earn by working overtime. "We can't go out and cover the road for him," said Skip Beaver, director of staff services. "But there are things we can do. We wanted to make sure they knew we were here for them."
"The day Lauren was diagnosed with leukemia, she was adopted by 100 people. They became like a second family for my family," Schultz said.
