Jim Brady’s Friend
Theme for this Week: Make Yourself Available
Monday, March 4

Key Bible Verse: There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). Bonus Reading:John 15:9–3

It didn’t even make the morning news when Bob Dahlgren died in 1985. But after the shooting of press secretary Jim Brady during the attempted assassination of President Reagan, it was Dahlgren who …

  1. took the vigil with Brady’s wife Sarah, through the long series of brain operations.

  2. with his wife, Suzie, took Brady’s young son Scott into their home through the early days of the ordeal.

  3. arranged for Brady’s friends to visit him by his hospital bedside.

  4. scouted out the advance arrangements as Brady returned to a semi-normal life.

  5. helped load and unload his friend from the van in which Brady traveled.

  6. helped Sarah field questions about Brady’s health and spent hours keeping friends posted on his condition.

  7. helped organize a foundation to assure the family’s financial support.

For more than four and a half years, Dahlgren devoted nearly all his time to the man he loved. Never did he complain or hesitate when needed. As Dr. Arthur Kobrine, the surgeon who lived through Brady’s long ordeal with him, said, “Everyone should have a friend like Bob Dahlgren.”

My Response: Someone who could use a real friend right now is …

Thought to Apply: The Lord doesn’t ask about your ability, only your availability; and if you prove your dependability, the Lord will increase your capability.
