Enrolling in seminary, I walked into the dean of men’s office. “Are you applying for the janitor’s job?” he asked.
“No, I’m here to see if any dorm rooms are available.”
“I’m sorry; the dorm’s full. But if you know anyone who wants a job as janitor … ”
I told him I wasn’t interested, and left. Walking outside, I prayed, Lord, please provide a room for me. God stopped me on the sidewalk and spoke to my heart, “Go take the job.”
But I prayed for a room, not a job! Knowing I needed to obey, I did an about-face and told the dean, “I’ll take that job.”
At first, as I scrubbed showers and emptied trashcans, I battled my pride, thinking how overqualified I was. But I made a surprising discovery. As I cleaned toilets every day for my three years in seminary, God spoke to my heart more clearly than I’d ever heard Him before. I meditated on Scriptures as I worked, and God gave me insights into His Word.
God used that job to teach me that in whatever tasks He calls me to do, I’m actually serving Him. If I wasn’t willing to serve Him as a custodian, how could He trust me with other responsibilities?
