I was anxious to get home from my New Zealand teaching assignment. But the day before my scheduled departure, the FAA grounded all DC-10s from flights inside or into the States. They'd discovered a dangerous mechanical problem; every affected aircraft had to be inspected. Of the three airlines that fly to New Zealand, two use DC-10s. Only one 350-passenger 747 flew every other night. I was one of 4,000 people stranded a world away from home. My frustration level rose as I reviewed all the commitments I wouldn't be there to keep.
Graciously offered a furnished house all to myself, I sat in a big easy chair the next morning and fumed like an untuned car. Then I remembered something I'd frequently told the Lord over the past six months. "Lord, I'm tired and dried up. I really need some rest, some uninterrupted time to be with You. I'll slow down if I can just find the time." The Lord found the time for me! He'd grounded me like a human DC-10.
I took the hint. I slept long and then spent several uninterrupted hours with my Bible, my pen, and my notebook. God filled me up with a whole new tankful of creative ideas those two days.
