Last December, five days after naming Georgia Tech coach George O'Leary its new head football coach, the University of Notre Dame announced that he'd resigned after admitting to falsifying his academic and athletic background.
For two decades O'Leary had claimed that he'd starred as a football player at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and earned a master's degree in education from New York University. Those misstatements followed him on biographical documents from one coaching position to another, and finally to Notre Dame, one of the most coveted and observed jobs in college football.
O'Leary's undoing began when The Union Leader in Manchester, N.H., began reporting for a feature article on him. In phone inquiries, it discovered that, although he claimed he'd earned a varsity letter for three years, former UNH coaches and players couldn't remember O'Leary ever playing there.
When Notre Dame officials contacted O'Leary, he admitted his misrepresentations about his playing career. Later he also "'fessed up" about the master's degree. O'Leary was swiftly expelled from the job he'd won just 36 hours earlier!
