Natural Sight
Theme for this Week: Responding to Loss
Wednesday, May 8

Key Bible Verse: God's … eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen … from what has been made (Romans 1:20, NIV). Bonus Reading:Psalm 19:1–6

Young John Muir went to work for a large Indianapolis machine shop, where his penchant for invention impressed the owners. But then a metal file Muir was working with slipped and punctured his eye. He lost sight in that eye, and his other eye went into a state of "sympathetic" blindness.

Muir was plunged into depression, but gradually recovered his sight. He also recovered a new appreciation of the gift God had returned to him. While convalescing, he sensed he was on the verge of finding a new mission for his life. Looking through a brochure of the Yosemite valley, that mission became clear.

The machine shop owners visited Muir and offered to make him a partner. He turned it down. Instead, Muir began exploring the great mountains of North America. In the late 1800s, he set physical standards for climbing—hard to believe for a man who used no ropes or climbing tools, and carried no tent or camping equipment. Through his speaking and writing, he returned a spiritual dimension to Nature that long had been lost to Christianity. He founded the Sierra Club and worked tirelessly to preserve Nature's wonders.

—Ken Gire in The Weathering Grace of God

My Response: I'll ask God to show me what a mishap I've had is preparing me for.

Thought to Apply: From all those deadly … experiences comes this delicate life and beauty, to teach us that what we … call destruction is creation.

—John Muir

0Prayer for the Week

Wise Father, keep me from getting sidetracked by setbacks. Instead, prod me to grow by overcoming them.
