I was driving home from speaking one Sunday evening. I'd promised seven-year-old Kelsey that I'd be home in time to tuck her in to bed. As the clock crept past 8:30, I got anxious and called my wife to tell her to keep Kelsey awake.

"She's spending the night at Laura's house," Lisa said.

"But I promised I'd tuck her in!" I protested, but then added, "I've got an idea! Call Laura's parents. Tell them I'll be there about 9:00. But ask them not to tell Kelsey. I want it to be a surprise."

Thirty minutes later, Laura's dad welcomed me in—to his house and silently pointed toward Laura's bedroom. I walked down the hallway, opened the door, and saw Kelsey's face peeking out of Laura's bed. "Hi there, Poptart!"

Kelsey giggled but didn't look the least bit surprised. "Did you know I was coming here?" I asked.

"No, but I heard your footsteps coming down the hall, so I figured you came here to tuck me in."

May our hearts become so familiar with the cadence of God's footsteps that when He breaks into our lives, we'll know it's Him, regardless if the environment is difficulty, suffering, even mourning.
