July/August 2002 5 4 Your Lifework Theme of the Week: Finding God's Will
Your Lifework
Theme of the Week: Finding God's Will
Saturday, August 17
Q. How do I discover the vocation that is the best use of the rest of my life? A. I believe that the primary method we should use to discover our God-ordained assignment in life (whether it's a paying job or a volunteer position) is by examining our desires. Why? "It is God who is at work within you, giving you the will and the power to achieve his purpose" (Philippians 2:13, PHILLIPS). You should ask yourself three questions: What needs in the world do I feel passionate about? Maybe as a child you were impressed by a particular teacher and since that time you've wanted to make a difference in other children's lives. Or possibly you're constantly daydreaming about starting a new business that will fulfill a unique niche in the marketplace. If God calls you to a particular vocation, He will give you "the will" to perform it.

What's my single greatest strength? God not only gives us "the will" but also "the power" to do His work. God won't call you to be a doctor without giving you the necessary aptitude in science. He won't call you to be a public speaker without also giving you the ability to organize and communicate your thoughts.

What do others say that I do best? When you've found your lifework, people will affirm you. They'll say, "You were born to do that" or "You make it look so easy." Conversely, when that affirmation isn't present, you should reconsider your choice of vocation. Other people can provide valuable insight about your lifework.
