God Plus One Theme of the Week: Following Directions Friday, August 2
Key Bible Verse: So if you are suffering according to God's will, keep on doing what is right, and trust yourself to the God who made you, for he will never fail you (1 Peter 4:19). Bonus Reading:Deuteronomy 26:16-18
One of colonial America's greatest men of faith was David Brainerd. Struck by the callousness with which he saw the European transplants treating Native Americans, Brainerd decided at age 19 to go preach the gospel to the Indians.
Everyone derided his plan. They pointed out that he couldn't speak the native languages. He'd only meet with hostility, they warned, because these animistic people, they assumed, were naturally suspicious of missionaries. His talents would be wasted and his health ruined attempting to live among these pagans.
But Brainerd believed in a big God who could overcome any obstacleas long as His servants were willing to obey Him. So he shrugged off the naysayers and set off. During the next nine years, he brought an estimated ten thousand tribespeople to faith in Christ!
At age 28, his life was abruptly cut short by a bout of consumption, brought on by overwork and the harsh weather endured in his travels. But his diary reveals a life of spiritual maturity marked by prayer, an unshakeable faith in God's plan and provision, and a willingness to suffer for the cause of Christ.
