Peer Pressure
Theme of the Week: Balancing Our Work
Friday, August 30

Key Bible Verse: But those who won't care for their own relatives, especially those living in the same household, have denied what we believe (1 Timothy 5:8). Bonus Reading:Luke 11:11-13

We get up and go to work so that we can provide for our children's physical needs. But I am also to provide for their emotional and spiritual needs. These don't require money. They require time—in large doses.

Most of us dads talk to our kids about resisting peer pressure. But peer pressure never goes away. Jesus said, "The highway to hell is broad … for the many who choose the easy way" (Matthew 7:13). That's where most of our peers are heading. The reason a lot of them appear successful is that they're absolute failures at home.

So why should I let them pressure me? I've only got 18 years to see my girl become a godly woman, to see my two boys become godly men. I'll think long and hard before I give up any of that time to the pressure of screwed-up peers. Life is too short. My kids are too precious.

Yes, it's my job to bring home the bacon. But I also have to be smart enough to say no to a promotion because, when carefully weighed, it comes out a demolition. Few of your peers have what it takes to make that kind of decision. But the good fathers do. God will honor them for it.

—Steve Farrar in Anchor Man

My Response: I've broadened my concept of providing for my family to include …

Thought to Apply: One man with courage makes a majority.

—Andrew Jackson (7th U.S. President)

0Prayer for the Week

Heavenly Father, may my children be drawn to you because they've been warmed by their earthly father's love.
