Don't assume you'll only be called to disciple guys with whom you naturally click. Take Terry. Being in insurance, he didn't think a lot of lawyers—and it showed. Terry was late for each of our lunch-break meetings for more than two years. He'd stay with an interested client until the deal was done. It really started to bug me.
But Terry's the guy God chose for me. As we worked through Operation Timothy (Christian Business Men's Committee discipling materials), sharing our lives with one another, we became close friends. During one meeting, Terry broke the news to me that one of his customers, a client of mine, was about to fire me as his lawyer. "It's not your legal work, Phil, it's your temperament," he explained. "They said at times you seem more concerned with your schedule than their case."
Pow! I was being lectured by one of my spiritual children about my old drive-too-hard-toward-the-task-and-forget-about-the-people attitude. Then Terry added, "Phil, I can't find one place in Scripture where Jesus rushed because He was under time pressure or lost His temper because somebody was late." It was an incredible truth!
