On a December Sunday morning, swarms of aircraft roared out of a clear sky over Hawaii's Pearl Harbor. Ships erupted into flames and billows of black smoke.
Aboard the cruiser New Orleans, Chaplain Howell Forgy helped crewmen break into a locked ammunition storeroom so the ship could mount a defense. Once inside, the men discovered that the ammunition hoist was out of commission. So they formed a human chain. Amid exploding bombs, screams, and acrid smoke, they passed the heavy artillery shells from man to man up to the gun deck. When Chaplain Forgy saw men's arms weakening and their faces showed signs of hopelessness, he smiled broadly, slapped the back of the man next to him, and shouted, "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!" His words, planted in a wartime song, lifted a nation's spirits.
You and I are also under heavy spiritual attack. The wounded are all around us, and we've taken our own hits. To survive and win, we must mount a strong defense and engage the enemy.
