Fatal Flaw
Theme of the Week: Storm the Gates
Tuesday, July 23

Key Bible Verse: Use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy … so that after the battle you will be standing (Ephesians 6:13). Bonus Reading:Psalm 18:16-24

British admiral Lord David Beatty commanded a flotilla at the Battle of Jutland during World War I. As the battle began, British and German ships engaged each other long-range. A heavy cruiser, the Lion, was hit by an artillery barrage and quickly sunk. Next the Indefatigable was hit in its powder magazine and blown to pieces. Then the Queen Mary was sunk, taking a crew of 1,200 sailors straight to the bottom. Watching this destruction among the proud ships of his fleet, Admiral Beatty turned to his bridge officer and said with characteristic British restraint, "There seems to be something wrong with our ships today, Chatfield."

A flaw in the design of the British ships was soon recognized. Though their hulls were heavily armored, their wooden decks offered almost no protection against enemy artillery shells dropped from above. Only after the British began to armor their ships on top as well as on the sides did they stop losing ships to German long-range artillery.

Effective armor is a crucial element in spiritual warfare too. If you leave anything unprotected, the enemy will find a way to exploit that chink in your armor-and he will destroy you.

—Ray Stedman in Spiritual Warfare

My Response: A chink in my armor I need to deal with is …

Thought to Apply: The preparation for war … is the real war. Battles are only a … public verification of the mastery gained during the "peace."

—William James
