Caught but Unconvinced
Theme of the Week: Following Directions
Sunday, July 28

Key Bible Verse: "Stay on the path that the LORD your God has commanded you to follow" (Deuteronomy 5:33). Bonus Reading:Deuteronomy 5:1-33

He was a star athlete at the college where I was teaching—popular, personable, and a good student. Now he sat across from me in shock, staggered by the news he'd just received: He was being suspended for cheating.

"I didn't think anyone took those rules seriously," he complained, shaking his head in disbelief. "After all, what's right for someone else isn't necessarily right for me. Rules are made to be broken!"

My heart when out to him, not just because of the disgrace he'd brought upon himself, but because he'd fallen for one of the devil's oldest lies: There's no such thing as right and wrong. But God has taught us otherwise. Some actions are always right or always wrong, and refusing to live by God's moral standards only brings us heartache and disaster.

The Ten Commandments summarize God's moral standards for His people; that's why they're still valid. (You can find them in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:7-21.) They're just as important today as when God gave them to the ancient Israelites more than 3,000 years ago.
