Map to McDonalds
Theme of the Week: Following Directions
Monday, July 29

Key Bible Verse: "If you obey all the laws and commands that I will give you today, all will be well with you and your children" (Deuteronomy 4:40). Bonus Reading:Deuteronomy 4:1-9

As our family piled into the van, headed for McDonalds, I handed a map I'd drawn to seven-year-old Kyle. "Okay, Kyle. It's up to you to make sure we get there." I drove to the corner and looked over my shoulder. "Where do I go now?"

Kyle looked at his map. "Turn left."

"Naw," I told him. "I think I know what I'm doing." I turned right instead.

Kyle burst out in frustration, "It says you're supposed to turn left!"

At the next decision point, I did the same thing. Soon Kyle was really mad. When we ended up at a dead end, I said, "I guess I didn't know where I was going, did I?"

"That's right, Dad, because you were supposed to follow the directions," Kyle shouted.

"Well, what do we do now?" I asked.

"Go back to the start, and we'll follow the directions."

So that's what we did. En route to McDonald's, we discussed our first try. "That's what happens when we don't obey the Bible," I told the kids. "When we think we know what we're doing and ignore the directions, we lose our way. The Scriptures are our directions for life."

My Response: An area in my life for which I'll search the Bible for direction is …

Thought to Apply: You can never go wrong when you choose to obey Christ.
