Blind Spot
Theme of the Week: Following Directions
Tuesday, July 30

Key Bible Verse: "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must … shoulder your cross daily, and follow me" (Luke 9:23). Bonus Reading:Deuteronomy 6:1-6, 35

John's wife sarcastically called down from her loft studio, "I see you're watching another Christian movie." Actually, John was watching sizzling, steamy scenes in a sex-packed, profanity-permeated action movie on pay TV.

His wife's comment jolted him like a lightning bolt. John had been a Christian for several years, but still struggled with areas of his life that he'd presumed would self-correct after his initial surrender to Christ. John realized his wife had unearthed another unguarded, unexamined area of his life that was unsurrendered. He could cancel his pay television, but he still wondered how he could be a Christian and continue to have so many blind spots.

The will of the flesh is an ugly ogre, a toady troll. He lurks in the shadows of every decision. Because of the will of the flesh, we must daily relinquish our right to have our own way. We're converted to salvation in a moment of time, but our conversion to obedience occurs on a time line. It's an ongoing, daily process. Let's face it, if we initially knew everything about ourselves that God wanted to change, we'd have blown our circuit-breakers!

—Patrick Morley in Walking with Christ in the Details of Life

My Response: I'm beginning to think I have a blind spot in the area of …

—Stephen Neill (Scottish missionary, 20th century)
