The Lure He Chooses
Theme of the Week: The Lure of Lust
Tuesday, July 9

Key Bible Verse: For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father. (1 John 2:16). Bonus Reading:Proverbs 7:4—23

Next, the fisherman must determine the best lure for catching the fish. A jig is the number one lure for catching trophy bass. The best jig is one with a skirt to hide the hook. Satan always tempts us with an innocent, intriguing appearance. He never reveals sexual lust's deadly hook.

The fisherman must also know how to cast the jig on the water as discreetly as possible. No plopping sounds. No talking. The skilled angler seeks to drop the jig onto the water's surface as gently as if it were a live insect.

Satan's best lures for human beings follow the same tactic. He presents something pleasant to the eye. No blaring fanfare to announce the arrival of the temptation. Just a quiet encounter—an opportunity. His temptations begin with a glance, a soft touch, a slight movement, a wink, a smile.

Some Christians think they've sinned if they're tempted by a cast lure. No, the sin is taking the bait. The truth is, all people—no matter how spiritually mature—are tempted. Satan continues to cast his lures throughout a person's life regardless of his age, occupation, or outstanding reputation.

—Ed Young in Fatal Distractions

My Response: One way Satan disguises the hook when tempting me is …

Thought to Apply: Be cautious. Opportunity does the knocking for temptation too.

—Mike Batt (British musician)

0Prayer for the Week

Holy God, help me to detect the dangling lures, and discern the consequences of responding to them.
