 Men of Integrity, September/October 2002
Playoff Preparation
Theme of the Week: Going Beyond 50/50
Thursday, October 3
Key Bible Verse: She is your equal partner in God's gift of new life. If you don't treat her as you should, your prayers will not be heard (1 Peter 3:7). Bonus Reading: 1 Peter 3:711
In 1983, the Washington Redskins beat the Atlanta Falcons 37-21 to send us into the playoffs. Next morning, before heading to work to map out a strategy against our first-round opponents, the Cowboys, I was feeling my oats when Pat complained, "Would you mind picking up your bathrobe and socks?"
The nerve of her! Speaking that way to such an important man! I thought. Then I picked them up. Next she brought up a problem with our boys. Doesn't she read the newspapers about what a tough coaching job I have this week? I railed internally. Why is she bothering me about the kids right now? I'd had it! I stormed out of the house, slamming the door.
I had a habit of prayingeyes openas I drove to work. The Lord and I had enjoyed many good conversations during my commute. But this morning He seemed ready to get out and take the bus if I didn't straighten out this matter with Pat.
Arriving at work, I dialed home. "Pat," I said, "I'm sorry. Please forgive me for being such a dope this morning. What you're taking care of with our two boys is far more important than what I'm doing here at work. I just want you to know that."

My Response: Have I allowed my career orientation to devalue my wife's role?
