Longing for God's Glory
Theme of the Week: Taking the Long View
Saturday, October 12

Q. What do you mean by longing for God's glory?

A. It's the ache to be home. When ministry takes me away from my family, the last hour of my return flight can seem excruciatingly long. Closing my eyes, I can feel my wife's warm hug as I step off the plane, hear my children's voices chiming, "Daddy!" I can see myself settling into my favorite chair with brownies and a crossword puzzle. Oh, that last hour ticks away so very slowly!

You and I are spiritual beings, made for a home that can't be built with human hands. The pursuits of this world can't satisfy. We're made to live in God's presence, to sense His whisperings, to catch His heart, and gaze in awe at His glory. This hunger can't be sated, this thirst can't be slaked—except by God Himself.

But what if I don't really feel this way?

Our hunger for God's glory runs deep but often goes undiscerned. The need to be connected to a purpose larger than ourselves, the knowledge that wonder hovers all around us, the yearning to nestle in arms of love—all these are but little inklings of that deeper desire to touch and be touched by heaven. When we long for rest, we actually long for His glory. When we jauntily pursue adventure, we are actually yearning for His glory.

What is His glory?

Like the sun's rays blinding our eyes, it's that moment when the light of who God is penetrates our darkness and fills our vision. His glory is who He is, the atmosphere created by His unique character.
