One cold, rainy morning I woke up late. As I rushed to get ready, the doorbell rang. It was Ron. I'd known him for about two years, during which he'd become poorer as he developed a drug habit. He'd done some yard work for us in the past and often washed cars for food and money. Once I bought him a bus ticket so he could get back to his family in another part of the country and get back on his feet. I didn't see him for a few months.

Now he was back in town, looking for help again. Though nearly late for a meeting, I heeded the counsel of [today's Key Bible Verse], let him in, and had him take off his wet jacket and sit by the heater. I fixed him a hot breakfast, put it in front of him, and went to take a shower. About ten minutes later, when I came out, the plate was clean, the front door open, and my bike and Ron had disappeared.

Later that night he came back and, having unlocked a side window during his previous visit, stole another housemate's bike. I never saw him again. [continued 10/14]
