Teddy's Reasons Theme of the Week: Making It the Lord's Day Thursday, October 31
Key Bible Verse: "The Sabbath
helps you remember that I am the LORD, who makes you holy" (Exodus 31:13). Bonus Reading:Exodus 31:12-17
Theodore Roosevelt made time to teach a Sunday school class throughout his four years at Harvard College.
Some of the twenty-sixth president's reasons for a man to go to church:
- In this actual world a churchless community, a community where men have abandoned and scoffed at or ignored their religious needs, is a community on the rapid downgrade.
- He will probably take part in singing some good hymns.
- He will listen to and take part in reading some beautiful passages from the Bible.
- He may not hear a good sermon but he will hear a sermon by a good man.
- He will meet and nod to, or speak to, good, quiet neighbors.
He will come away feeling a little more charitably toward all the world.
- The man who does not, in some way,
connect himself with some active, working church misses many opportunities for helping his neighbors, and therefore, incidentally, for helping himself.
- Church work and church attendance mean the cultivation of the habit of feeling some responsibility for others and the sense of braced moral strength which prevents a relaxation of one's own moral fiber.
My Response: How connected am I with my local church?
Thought to Apply: The Lord's Day is a firm foundation on which to build a six-story week. -Source Unknown
