Teddy's Reasons
Theme of the Week: Making It the Lord's Day
Thursday, October 31

Key Bible Verse: "The Sabbath … helps you remember that I am the LORD, who makes you holy" (Exodus 31:13). Bonus Reading:Exodus 31:12-17

Theodore Roosevelt made time to teach a Sunday school class throughout his four years at Harvard College.

Some of the twenty-sixth president's reasons for a man to go to church:

  1. In this actual world a churchless community, a community where men have abandoned and scoffed at or ignored their religious needs, is a community on the rapid downgrade.
  2. He will probably take part in singing some good hymns.
  3. He will listen to and take part in reading some beautiful passages from the Bible.
  4. He may not hear a good sermon — but he will hear a sermon by a good man.
  5. He will meet and nod to, or speak to, good, quiet neighbors. … He will come away feeling a little more charitably toward all the world.
  6. The man who does not, in some way, … connect himself with some active, working church misses many opportunities for helping his neighbors, and therefore, incidentally, for helping himself.
  7. Church work and church attendance mean the cultivation of the habit of feeling some responsibility for others and the sense of braced moral strength which prevents a relaxation of one's own moral fiber.

My Response: How connected am I with my local church?

Thought to Apply: The Lord's Day is a firm foundation on which to build a six-story week.
