Graduation Surprise
Theme of the Week: Taking the Long View
Wednesday, October 9

Key Bible Verse: And now the prize awaits me … that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that great day of his return (2 Timothy 4:8). Bonus Reading:Hebrews 11:1, 13-16

It was an especially happy day for our family when my brother graduated from the U. of Tennessee Medical School because my father was a professor on its faculty. Mark had always wanted to grow up and be a doctor like Dad.

After the commencement address, the graduating class lined up at the front of the stage on which were seated the medical school president and the entire faculty. As his turn came, and Mark stepped onto the first step, something strange occurred. My father, in full academic regalia, slid across his row, walked down the aisle, and approached the center of the platform where the president was standing. How embarrassing! Every eye was focused on my dad parading around.

Dad walked right up to the president. My brother proceeded across the stage. Dad took my brother's diploma from the president's hand and, as Mark approached, handed him his diploma and shook his hand.

Unknown to us, a medical school tradition permitted a faculty member with a child graduating to personally bestow the diploma. How meaningful to Mark to receive his diploma from his very own father!

—Stephen Lawson in Men Who Win

My Response: What will my Father say when He hands me my diploma?

Thought to Apply: Because eternity was closeted in time, He is my open door to forever.

—Luci Shaw (poet)
