One night after buying the Omni Hotel chain in 1996, Robert Rowling sat in a plush room at one of his hotels flipping through the channels. He was dismayed at the pornograhic films available on pay-for-view channels.
"I don't want this in my hotels," Rowling announced to his staff the next day.
But removing the movies wasn't easy. He had to switch movie-service providers and buy new televisions for every room—a total of 8,700 sets. The change, including lost revenue, cost him $4 million.
Because he inherited existing contracts from the previous owner, Rowling had to wait until each service's contract expired. He didn't waver on his commitment, and on November 5, 1999, announced to the world the adult movies would no longer be available.
By the end of July, Omni received 70,000 letters and 10,000 e-mails thanking the company for removing X-rated films, plus pornographic magazines from its gift shops—which Rowling did when he bought the hotels.
Many in the industry said Rowling took a big risk in removing the movies because they're big money makers. But since the porn movies were yanked, Rowling has watched his occupancy rates increase.
