Do the Right Thing Theme of the Week: Drawing a Line Saturday, September 28
Q. So what exactly is conviction?
A. The dictionary defines it as the state of being convinced, a strong belief.
When you think of conviction, what comes to your mind?
Courage is the word that jumps out at me right away. To stand for what you believe in the face of adversity, ridicule, or not being accepted takes courage.
It takes inner couragereal strengthto stand firm in what you believe and not be easily swayed, not be easily influenced by peer pressure, and not be distracted or taken off course.
When you're truly committed to an ideal or principle based on living by your convictions, you're not easily swayed. A champion lives by a higher standard, therefore he stands firm when others around him fall.
But haven't you found that going against the grain isn't usually appreciated?
At times in sports, you can do something right, yet your action goes completely unnoticed or somebody else gets the credit. At those times, what's important is just recognizing who you are, what your role is, and what your responsibilities are and accepting that doing what you're supposed to do is normal.
If what you do receives acclaim, fine. If it doesn't receive acclaim, you still know that you're on the right track because you're doing what you are supposed to do.
And you do what you are supposed to do simply because it is the right thing to do.
