Q. What does being available involve? A. Simply observe situations as they happen, and wait for the appropriate moment to lend an ear, a word, or a hand. That's exactly what happened to make an Olympic and professional champion out of a young man who could have gone in a totally opposite direction: "When I was a kid in Louisville," he's quoted in the February, 1996 Reader's Digest, "my parents gave me a brand new bicycle. Proud and happy, I parked it outside a gym one day. Then somebody stole it, and it just about broke my heart. Someone told me there was a policeman in the basement, and when I found him, I told him that I'd find the guy who'd stolen my bike and beat him up. When he discovered that I didn't know how to fight, he offered to teach me. That's how I got into boxing." Unlike Muhammed Ali, I was never a champion of the ring myself, but I also had adults who reached out to me and made a difference in my life. Mr. Bidelman, for instance, my junior high Sunday school teacher. He would take a ragtag group of junior highers way upstairs in the choir loft and pour his life into us every week. He'd work so hard to make those Sunday school lessons exciting and real, all while keeping a very energetic group of kids focused and on target. As if that weren't enough, he sponsored and attended all the youth functions and helped coach the church basketball team. Then he started a 4-H club in the church and was constantly there guiding us through the ranks of that program. Randy Scott is vice president and publisher at Cook Communications.
