Walking Tall
Theme of the Week: Duplicate Yourself
Monday, December 2

Key Bible Verse: He found Philip and said to him, "Come, be my disciple" (John 1:43). Bonus Reading:John 1:35–51

Ricky Byrdsong, a tall, gangly tenth-grader, was sauntering through the hall at Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta when he heard what sounded like a thunderclap rolling down the hallway. Every male in school knew its source: Coach Lester was a six-foot-four, barrel-chested man whose very presence commanded respect. And that day his booming voice was calling Ricky.

"Hey you, Son!" he said, staring up and down at Ricky's six-foot-five frame. "You're too big to be walking these halls and not playing basketball. I'll see you in the gym at 3:30 today!"

Ricky didn't know a thing about basketball. He didn't even have basketball shoes and his single mom didn't have any spare money. But he was afraid of not making an appearance, so he went to the gym and began a journey that led to an outstanding career that took Ricky to the top. He coached college basketball for 18 years and eventually became head coach of the Northwestern University Wildcats—before his career was cut short in 1999.

Coach Lester gave Ricky a vision of what he was capable of, then offered to help his young protégé reach the goal.

My Response: A fellow I could tap to encourage and work with is …

Thought to Apply: My object will be, if possible, to form Christian men, for Christian boys I can scarcely hope to make.
