Sailing Alone
Theme of the Week: Making It the Lord's Day
Friday, November 1

Key Bible Verse: And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other (Hebrews 10:25, NLT). Bonus Reading:Acts 2:41–47

A navy man told me that when a vessel is in port, less than 5 percent of the crew attends church. Out at sea, that number doubles. But once, when a fleet destroyer was sunk, 100 percent of the crew attended services.

We can end up using the Emergency Broadcasting System of Christianity. Unless we have a felt need, we don't worship. We err when we put the emphasis on us not God. Whether or not we feel a need to worship God, we do have a real need to do so.

Though 94 percent of Americans say they believe in God, an amazing 80 percent expect to arrive at their religious beliefs independent of any church. If you've worked around Christians who try to make it on their own without commitment to a local body of believers, as I have, you're weary of picking up the pieces of lives shattered by lack of accountability.

Christians today need to grasp the importance of loyalty to a vital body of believers. If we truly love Christ, we'll want to be around His people, supporting a local church through membership.

—Patrick M. Morley in The Seven Seasons of a Man's Life

My Response: What do my worship patterns say about my love for Christ?

Thought to Apply: Do not let Sunday be taken from you. … If your soul has no Sunday, it becomes an orphan.

—Albert Schweitzer (French missionary doctor, 20th century)
