Made Out of Money?
Theme of the Week: Thanksgiving Is a Choice
Tuesday, November 26

Key Bible Verses: "Pray like this: … Give us our food for today" (Matthew 6:9, 11). Bonus Reading:1 Timothy 6:6–7, 17

I came home and opened the mail. As I reviewed our bank statement, I saw a declining balance. This triggered an angry rant directed at my family. "Why can't we seem to get control of our finances? Money just flows out of here. Doesn't anyone realize that we aren't made out of money?"

The next morning, a question in a daily devotional booklet broke through to me. "What did Jesus tell us to pray for when he taught his disciples to pray?" the text asked—and replied with [today's Key Bible Verse].

"Did you have breakfast today? Lunch?" the text went on. Yes, of course. "Did you give thanks to God for answering your prayer?" asked the convicting text. Oops.

No, I hadn't been thanking God for giving me and my family our daily bread. No, I hadn't been thanking God that I had a bank balance to worry about, that I had a family to talk to.

What I'd been doing was focusing on was what was absent, not what was present. The Evil One tempts us to be concerned with what's not there and to wonder where it will come from. We need to remember that we have a lunch because there is a God who provided it.

My Response: Something that is present that I need to thank God for is …

Thought to Apply: If a fellow isn't thankful for what he's got, he isn't likely to be thankful for what he's going to get.
