Men of Integrity, January/February 2003

Delayed Reaction
Theme of the Week: "Everyone Does It"
Tuesday, February 4

Key Bible Verse: I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and everyone else (Acts 24:16). Bonus Reading: Romans 2:13–16

I stopped by the post office to mail books and a letter to my friend Gary in Australia. "What's in here?" a clerk quizzed me.

"Some books," I replied. "And a letter." She began weighing.

"If you have just books here, it's … $18.63. But if you have a letter it's … $26.31." She looked at me expectantly. I said nothing. She added, "We can just send it along as books," and waited. My brain seemed paralyzed. "Let's send it as books," she concluded, stamping the parcel. "That's $18.63."

I handed her a twenty. It all happened so fast.

Driving home, I didn't feel right. Next day I still didn't feel right. I drove to the post office and waited until the line suctioned me in front of the same clerk.

"Hi," I began, "I was here yesterday and said that a package didn't have a letter, but it did. Here's a check for $7.68 to cover it."

"Sir, I can't take that check," she replied tersely.

"Well, I'm going to leave it here," I said. "Put it toward a party fund. I don't care. My integrity's worth more than any money."

"Okay, sir." She didn't appear to get it. I left the check anyway.

My Response: When have I felt something just wasn't right?

Thought to Apply: There is no such thing as a minor lapse of integrity. —Tom Peters (business trainer)
