Men of Integrity, January/February 2003

'You Finally Got to Me'
Theme of the Week: "Everyone Does It"
Thursday, February 6

Key Bible Verse: People with integrity have firm footing, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall (Proverbs 10:9). Bonus Reading: Hebrews 10:32–36

To Phil's surprise, tears began to well up in his friend Harry's eyes. "Phil," Harry stammered, as he began staring at the table. "Phil, I always thought you were a little nuts to be so conscientious about paying the government every possible cent you could. But last year, I got to thinking you probably slept better at night than I did … that you never worried about being audited like I did … and that your way of business was probably way more honoring to God than mine.

"Phil, you finally got to me. I've ordered my accountant to keep my books like you've always said I should … and now you're thinking about backing out? Hey, I can loan you the money to keep you going for a while at no interest, if that's what it takes. But now—after all these years—don't give in now to less than what you know is right. Please!"

That was all Phil needed to hear. He kept his books and paid his taxes as he always had. Just as he'd figured, his accounts were nearly wiped out that April, and for a few months his business was touch and go. But he never had to take Harry up on the loan offer—and his business eventually recovered.

My Response: A tough choice I made that was worth it was …

Thought to Apply: I value people with a conscience. It's like a beeper from God. —Robert Orben (screenwriter, humorist)
