Up to Code Theme of the Week: "Everyone Does It" Mark Sutton & Bruce Hennigan Sunday, February 2, 2003
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: But there is going to come a time of testing at the judgment day to see what kind of work each builder has done (1 Corinthians 3:13). Bonus Reading:1 Corinthians 3:10-15
Several years ago Hurricane Andrew slammed into Florida, killing many, wounding hundreds more, and causing widespread destruction. In one town, TV cameras recorded a lone house standing firm on its foundation, surrounded by the debris of neighboring houses. "Why is your house the only one still standing?" a reporter asked the homeowner. "How did you escape severe damage?"
"I built this house myself," the man replied. "I built it according to the Florida state building code. When the code called for 2" x 6" roof trusses, I used 2" x 6" roof trusses. When it called for screws, I used screws. I was told that a house built according to code could withstand a hurricane. I did, and it did. I suppose no one else around here followed the code."
When the sun is shining and the breezes gentle, it can appear unnecessarily awkward to insist on not cutting corners like everyone else. But when the bitter gales whip around you, having adhered to convictions provides a basis for confidence.
