Non-Person? Theme of the Week: Our Incomparable God Peter Deison Thursday, February 20, 2003

Key Bible Verse: What are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us? (Psalm 8:4). Bonus Reading:Psalm 63:1-8
Morris Davis was put in jail for "praying." It all began when Davis was picked up and charged with arson. He was taken to a room at the police station for a lie detector test. Thinking he was alone, he prayed that old familiar prayer, "Lord, let me get away with it just this once." But a policeman overheard his prayer and submitted it as evidence against him.
The lower court ruled that this was a private conversation that couldn't be submitted as evidence. The Canadian government, however, appealed this ruling, and the Court of Appeals decided that it was admissible evidence because a prayer isn't a private conversation, since God isn't a person. Following this trial, a newspaper ran the story under the headline, "God Ruled a Non-Person."
Most people suspect that God exists but never live as if they expect to meet Him face to face. Perhaps we make the same mistake. We claim a personal faith, yet our relationship to God is impersonal. We believe God is holy, righteous, almighty. But these qualities don't describe anyone we know. God becomes someone we put on a pedestal so far above us that He ceases to be a real person.

My Response: Something that has made God personal to me is
Thought to Apply: Simply reading the Bible, I encountered not a misty vapor but an actual Person
unique, distinctive, and colorful.
