God Has a Name Theme of the Week: Our Incomparable God

Key Bible Verse: O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth! (Psalm 8:1Psalm 8:1). Bonus Readings: Genesis 22:1-14; Exodus 17:8-16; Judges 6:11-24
Oprah Winfrey once mocked the idea of God having a specific name and being jealous when He isn't worshiped. She said, "'IT' doesn't care what we call 'IT'!" But our God isn't anonymous. He reveals His names because He wants us to know Him.
Under the "B's," in a book of his that defines religious terms, Frederick Buechner slips in the following: "BUECHNER: It is my name. It is pronounced Beekner. If somebody mispronounces it in some foolish way, I have the feeling that what's foolish is me. If somebody forgets it, I feel that it is I who am forgotten. I can't imagine myself with any other nameHeld, say, or Merrill. If my name were different, I would be different. When I tell somebody my name, I have given him a hold over me that he didn't have before. If he calls it out, I stop, look, and listen whether I want to or not. In the Book of Exodus, God tells Moses that his name is Yahweh, and God hasn't had a peaceful moment since."
The Scriptures are filled with the names of God. Passages where Yahweh is linked with another word"The Lord Will Provide," "
Is My Banner," and "
Is Peace" illustrate how God meets the deepest needs of His people.

My Response: The name of God I'll reflect on today is _____.
Thought to Apply: God doesn't reveal his grand design. He reveals himself.
