My Kind of People
Theme of the Week: What's Wrong with the World?
Howard Hendricks
Tuesday, January 14, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Don't you know that those who do wrong will have no share in the Kingdom of God? (1 Corinthians 6:9). Bonus Reading:Ephesians 2:1-10

My close friend the late Ray Stedman was preaching through 1 Corinthians and came to [today's Key Bible Verse]. That remarkable passage goes on: "Don't fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers, and swindlers—none of these will have a share in the Kingdom of God. There was a time when some of you were just like that."

When Ray came to that point, he said, "I want to do something I've never done before. How many of you in this auditorium were saved out of those characteristics? Stand to your feet." The place froze. Ray said it seemed like an eternity before an 86-year-old woman in the back stood. It broke the ice. One after another, hundreds of people got on their feet.

In that crowd was a pagan student invited by his friends to come to church. He was sitting there, reading through this list. One after another, people stood to their feet. He looked around, and the tears started down his face. He said, "Man, these are my kind of people." Through that experience he came to faith.

—Howard Hendricks in Preaching Today

My Response: I'll thank God for what I've been delivered from—or spared.

Thought to Apply: We only confess our little faults to persuade people that we have no big ones.

—François de la Rochefoucauld (French writer, 17th century)

0Prayer for the Week

Dear Savior, being saved didn't inoculate me from sin. Help me to recognize and confess it, and experience Your cleansing.
