Risky Business
Theme of the Week: Bringing Jesus on the Job
Keith Miller
Thursday, January 30, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Don't hide you light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all (Matthew 5:15). Bonus Reading:Matthew 10:32-33

One Friday, while the executive vice-president of our company was on a trip around the world, the pressures began to build due to critical business growth. I called my secretary into my office. "Lottie," I said, "I need to pray about this business. Monday morning I'm going to come to work a few minutes early and pray in the conference room. If anyone else would like to do this too, they can." Then, I did one of the most difficult things I'd ever done. I then went around to the department heads and secretaries and told them the same thing.

That weekend I kicked myself clear around the yard as I mowed it. Now I'd gone too far. It wasn't my company. Besides, when no one showed up on Monday morning, I'd lose face as a manager. But I told God I was sorry for my lack of faith, and said I was willing to fail for Him.

Monday morning, almost all of the 14 people in that office were in the conference room. I realized then that many people really want God to be part of their vocational lives. We decided to pray for each other, for all who came into that office, and for Christ to come into that company's life through us.

—Keith Miller in The Edge of Adventure

My Response: What mixed feelings do I have about sharing Christ at work?

Thought to Apply: A man may study because his brain is hungry for knowledge … but he prays because his soul is hungry for God.

—Leonard Ravenhill (pastor, author)
