Liquid Courage
Theme of the Week: Booze Busting
Tuesday, April 29, 2003

Key Bible Verses: Don't let the sparkle and smooth taste of wine deceive you. For in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent; it stings like a viper (Proverbs 23:31-32). Bonus Reading:Proverbs 23:29-35

Jennifer's father arrived at the crash site just as the paramedics were covering up his daughter's mangled body.

How could this have happened? He asked himself. How could she do this? Seeing the heap of twisted metal and smelling alcohol everywhere was more than he could take. How would he tell his wife their only daughter was dead? The only way I can manage that, he thought, is to get a little something from the closet first.

Jennifer's father drove home and managed to make his way to his closet without catching his wife's attention. Desperate to reach the liquid courage he'd hidden out of sight, he fumbled with the clothes and boxes, so carefully replaced only hours before. He stopped abruptly as his shaking hand found the folded note instead of the whiskey he'd expected.

Jennifer had written: "Dear Daddy, We tried to find someone to buy us beer tonight, but couldn't find anyone. This is a special night, and we knew you had a little something hidden in the closet. Please don't be mad at us. Thanks to you, we're going to have a good time tonight. Love, Jennifer."

—John Jacobs in The Ultimate Champion

My Response: What example am I setting for others with alcohol or other substances?

Thought to Apply: I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.
