Key Bible Verse: "Do not testify falsely against your neighbor" (Exodus 20:16). Bonus Reading:Philippians 3:7-12
So what does following the Ten Commandments look like in the marketplace? Consider the ninth commandment (today's Key Bible Verse). In our litigious society, it's becoming more and more common for business leaders to give testimony in court, either when one company sues another or when an individual sues a corporation. Perjury, or lying under oath, is a serious offense in our legal system. And when a person stands up and swears to tell the truth in court, he's saying that he accepts the standard that the ninth commandment sets forth and he's not going to lie in his testimony.
Then there's the first commandment"Do not worship any other gods besides me" (Exodus 20:3). We might commend ourselves because we would never bow down in front of a statue of Buddha or pray to Vishnu. But gods are not limited to religious figures. What about success, information, money, the desire to be famous, or the need to be the most innovative? These can become gods if we allow ourselves to become obsessed with them, or if we allow them to displace our relationship with Christ as the most important pursuit in our lives.
