Resurrectee? Theme of the Week: Raised with Christ Michael Card Monday, April 21, 2003

Key Bible Verse: Yet we have this assurance: Those who belong to God will live; their bodies will rise again! (Isaiah 26:19). Bonus Reading:Acts 2:22-33a
While in high school, I worked late nights for an ambulance company joined to a funeral parlor, which I sometimes helped clean up. So I viewed many a deceased body in a casket or lying on a table in the "prep" room. I kept thinking, There's no way this person's ever going to get up again! It's one thing to talk about resurrection in a Bible study. It's another to stand before prospective "resurrectees" and claim they'll rise again. Yet Jesus did just that!
John, the first to see the contents of Jesus' tomb, mentioned two objects: The strips of linen that had been wrapped around the body were simply "lying there"; the cloth that had covered Jesus' face was folded up. These details indicate an absence of haste. Jesus unwrapped the cloth, folded it, and lay it separately from the linen strips, which His body seems to have simply passed through.
Imagining the moment of Resurrection, I picture Jesus' heart, still since Friday, beginning to beat again. His chest expands and begins steadily to rise and fall. His eyes slowly open beneath the facial cloth. I wonder if there'll be the same absence of haste when my own eyes slowly open to finally see His face.

My Response: How does the Easter account buttress my assurance and hope?
Thought to Apply: And the grave became a place of hope,/ For the heart that sin and sorrow broke/ Is beating once again.
