A Scarred Savior—Forever
Theme of the Week: Raised with Christ
Jack Hayford
Wednesday, April 23, 2003

Key Bible Verse: I saw a Lamb that had been killed but was now standing between the throne and the four living beings (Revelation 5:6). Bonus Reading:Romans 12:1

There is a curious fact about Jesus' post-Resurrection appearances to His disciples. Although He was completely and miraculously healed of His wounds, the scars could still be seen. This seems curious because the body in which He appeared to them was a "glorified" body—that is, one that lives by spiritual energy instead of physical energy. It's the same body that He'll have forever, which clearly indicates that when we stand before Him in our eternal bodies—without wound, scar, or any deficiency—His body will remain marked by Calvary's wounds!

I have a scar on my wrist where I burned myself when I was just a boy. I have another scar on my abdomen from surgery I experienced years ago as an adult. These are but two of a half-dozen scars on my body, all of which will be absent when I receive an eternal body at the resurrection. But the Bible reveals that heaven will contain One who will bear scars throughout eternity: His name is Jesus. And John, in the Phillips and New English Bible translations of [today's Key Bible Verse], records seeing Him beside the throne as a lamb with "the fresh marks of slaughter" still visible on His body.

—Jack Hayford in The Visitor

My Response: As I picture the resurrected Savior, I'll thank Him for what He endured for me.

Thought to Apply: Christ, having sacrificed himself once, is to eternity a certain and valid sacrifice for the sins of all faithful.

—Ulrich Zwingli (Swiss reformer)
