Do absolute standards and consistency really matter all that much?
Author Lloyd Douglas describes a ritual he went through every morning when he was a university student living in a boarding house. Downstairs on the first floor lived an elderly, retired music teacher who was confined to a wheelchair. Douglas would bound down the steps, open the man's door, and ask, "Well, what's the good news?"
The old man would pick up his tuning fork, tap it on the side of his wheelchair, and declare, "That's middle C! It was middle C yesterday; it'll be middle C tomorrow; it'll be middle C a thousand years from now. The tenor upstairs sings flat, the piano across the hall is out of tune, but, my friend, that is middle C!"
This sure foundation resonated with both men, just as the Bible's sure delineation of right and wrong resonates with so many of us. We long for a middle-C solid moral foundation in our lives, with consistency and permanence. And that's just what the authoritative declarations of God's Word provide.
