Key Bible Verse: "Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy" (Exodus 20:8). Bonus Reading:Exodus 20:9-11

Ruth and Jerry Keehner have been struggling with managing their careers in light of the Fourth Commandment.

The Keehners are professional musicians, members of the U.S. Navy Band who also do quite a bit of freelance work. When the phone rings with a job offer, a freelance musician's natural reaction is to immediately say, "Yes, I'm available." But as the Keehners contemplate potential assignments, they're constantly evaluating how they can keep the Lord's day holy while fulfilling the obligations of their professional calling.

It's not an easy task, but as followers of Christ, they can't trivialize such decisions. There might be times when they can accept a job offer and times when they must turn one down, but there are no times when they can make that choice without considering God's laws.

The Ten Commandments have been around for 3,500 years. Their influence and effectiveness have stood the test of time across geographic and cultural lines. So if someone wants to follow a different standard, the onus is on him to come up with one that's better than God's law. That's a tall order, because a system of ethics that applies to only one person is useless.

My Response: How can I avoid trivializing God's laws?

Thought to Apply: The Ten Commandments are not multiple choice.
