Theme of the Week: Take Him at His Word
Wednesday, March 12, 2003

Key Bible Verse: "I am the Lord … who teaches you what is good and leads you along the paths you should follow" (Isaiah 48:17). Bonus Reading:Psalm 25:8-10

One summer Ben said, "Dad, I need $200 to buy some blades."

"You're going to get the money," I said as his eyes lit up. "But not from me. You're going to earn it. I'll teach you to mow lawns."

"You've got to be kidding!" Ben responded.

"Trust me, Ben," I replied. We got out the mower, and I demonstrated mowing technique on the front yard, then let him loose on the back yard. He did a great job.

"Ben, now we'll use the computer to make a flyer promoting Ben's Lawn Mowing Service."

"Are you sure, Dad?"

"Trust me, Ben."

The flyer informed prospective customers who Ben Owens was, how well he could mow lawns, and what his prices were. "Now, Ben, take the mower house to house. Hand the person a flyer and ask if he or she'd like the lawn mowed."

"Are you sure, Dad?"

"Trust me, Ben."

Off he went. He returned 90 minutes later, sweaty and with little green flakes stuck to his clothes. He waved a twenty dollar bill in the air, and shouted, "Dad, you're a genius. And I have another customer waiting for me!"

—Daniel Owens in In God We Trust but Only as a Last Resort

Thought to Apply: Trustfulness is based on confidence in God, whose ways I do not understand. If I did, there would be no need for trust.

0Prayer for the Week

Heavenly Father, losing control is scary. Teach me to trust the tests and unknowns in my life to You.
