Riding along on a trip, our kids began compiling a glossary of oft-used parental expressions. They had us laughing to keep from crying.

"We'll see"—a term that means "I'll think about it."

"I'll think about it"—means "maybe tomorrow."

"Tomorrow"—a term to express time increments from 30 days up to never.

"Ask your mom"—means "no" but it's her turn to tell you.

Kids are smart. They know what's going on. You're not fooling them a bit. They know you're bewildered and confused and don't know all the answers. They know that the louder you say something, the less sure you are that it's right. They know that sometimes when you're shouting at them, it's because you're mad at someone else and it has nothing to do with them except that they're in the unhappy position of being unable to answer back.

But they'll forgive your errors of the head if over the days and months you've made it unmistakably clear that there's nothing anywhere in your heart for them except boundless, limitless love.
