Theme of the Week: Marks of a Servant
Monday, March 31, 2003

Key Bible Verse: In everything we do we try to show that we are true ministers of God (2 Corinthians 6:4). Bonus Reading:2 Corinthians 6:1-4

When Arthur Lindsey, a West Terre Haute, Indiana grocer, decided to follow Jesus Christ in 1949, he wanted to share the message of God's love with as many as possible. In 1958 he began a gospel radio program. The program was picked up by inmates at the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary, who asked their chaplain to invite Lindsey to speak at a chapel service.

Once inside the prison doors, Lindsey decided to reach out personally to these men. For the next 38 years, he visited the prisoners each week, shared meals with them, and drove them to the bus station when they were paroled. Each month, Lindsey spoke in chapel.

Lindsey never stopped thinking of his friends behind bars. To stay connected, over the next four decades, he wrote more than 600 letters, keeping track of inmates when they were transferred or after they were paroled.

Lindsey also organized an annual reunion of former inmates. For more than 30 years, men who'd committed their lives to Jesus Christ in prison returned with Lindsey to share their stories with men behind bars.

Lindsey, 92, still corresponds with former inmates.

My Response: A "niche" in which I could serve might be …

Thought to Apply: God is not looking for more stars; He's looking for more servants.
