Q. What did your "ultimate vacation" teach you about trust?
A. I cashed in a ton of frequent-flier miles and flew the family to Maui. We stayed at an incredible resort with five pools connected by waterslides, and the beach only a stone's throw away. What a place for kids!
One night Deb and I sat on the edge of our bed looking into the browned faces of our two sons as they lay fast asleep. It seemed as if they were actually smiling in their sleep. I realized that not once had they ever asked, "Hey, Dad, are you sure you have enough money for this great hotel?" They never worried if I had enough cash for the souvenirs I bought them. They just kept on asking for things, like, "Dad, can we go to the Hard Rock Café for lunch?"
It dawned on me that they didn't have a care in the world! They knew Dad wouldn't take them on a trip like this without planning to cover every situation. They trusted Dad.
As I looked at their little faces, so happy and content, I thought, I'd love to be a child like that again! No worries, no cares, no fears! It was then that the Holy Spirit spoke to me in a fresh way. Dan, you can still be a child like that if you'll only trust Me like your children trust you.
I'm sure the Lord didn't mean that my life would be simple and carefree. But God did invite me to live in childlike faith in Him.
He even told the disciples, who were adults, "I assure you, unless you … become as little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 18:3).
