A friend I treasure once called me from a hotel where he was speaking at a retreat. There he'd met a woman whom he'd found very attractive. They struck up an ordinary conversation that became more and more flirtatious until the two embraced. My friend, a married man, invited the woman up to his hotel room. She accepted, saying she'd call shortly, then join him.
My friend went to his room. As he waited for the tryst to happen, his desire began to drop, and his dismay with his situation to rise. That's when he called me to talk. He said he wanted to keep the phone line blocked so he couldn't take her call. "Just stay on the line with me until this goes away," he said.
About a half hour later, a knock came on the door. It was the woman, looking him up. While I listened, he crossed the room to the door and said, "I'm sorry, but I'm on an important phone call, and it's going to take a while." She left, saying if he still wanted to get together, to call her room. He acknowledged her offer, bolted the door, and returned to the phone. In a few more minutes, he felt strong enough to stay true, and we said good night.
