As we try to keep up with the demanding pace of life in our society, we risk growing distant, even from those closest to us. People around us—even family—may not know how much we care about and appreciate them.

I recently picked up a new habit from Miles McPherson, a former NFL player for the San Diego Chargers who speaks to thousands of young people and parents each year. Miles teaches a simple practice. Ask those you come into contact with this question: "Do you know what I like about you?" Then follow up by saying something positive about the person.

It's actually an easy habit to develop, and the goodwill that comes from accentuating the positive is mysteriously contagious. I say, "You know what I like about you?" to my wife, Lyndi, every day. And it's fun because I never run out of new things to say.

Have you ever tried to share encouraging words with those you interact with each day? Does your wife know what you like about her? Do your children? Coworkers? Parents? It's not hard to find at least one thing you like about other people. And when you do, don't keep it to yourself, tell them.
