Theme of the Week: Going Ballistic

Key Bible Verses: In everything you do, stay away from complaining and arguing, so that no one can speak a word of blame against you (Philippians 2:14-15). Bonus Reading:Psalm 37:8-11

At age 27, Paul Azinger was the second-highest-paid golfer and PGA Player of the Year. Yet while he professed his trust in Christ, he felt weighed down by angry impatience that would explode on the course. "Golf is a very temperamental sport," admits Paul. "When I'd show a negative emotion, I'd feel guilty because golf is so much in the public eye. Then I wouldn't feel right about going to the Bible, and I'd get on an emotional and spiritual roller coaster."

With the help of tour chaplain Larry Moody, Paul began to realize that he could be determined yet not angry, angry yet not out of control.

"I can still get angry," he confesses, "but now I know I need to ask as quickly as possible to be forgiven of that anger. Golfers expect so much of themselves. You can't play a round without thinking about that bad lie in the bunker or in the creek, or hitting that one spike mark, or getting that one bad hop. I was too hard on myself, I know, and I'm still capable of showing negative emotion, but I'm less likely to be beaten down by it. That's why [today's Key Bible Verses] are so important to me. They tell me to do everything without complaining."

—Path to Victory

Thought to Apply: People who fly into a rage always make a bad landing.

—Will Rogers ("cowboy philosopher")

My Response: Is self-directed anger okay? Why or why not?

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, empower me to channel my emotions so that I'm a guided missile, not a loose cannon.
