My date and her girlfriend were in tears, terrified that I was going to kill us all on the icy road. I wasn't too concerned. I was drunk. Angry. I gunned the gas, swerving my borrowed car through the snowbound lanes of Columbia, Missouri.
Crunch! We slammed into a parked police car.
I was a lineman on the U. of Missouri football team, and I had a huge problem with alcohol. My date happened to be Lyndi, my future wife, and our relationship was off to a shaky start. The policeman was in his car when I rammed into it. He approached my window, leaned in, and asked me to get out. I replied, "I don't think you're big enough to get me out of this car!" He didn't need to. Lyndi shoved me out herself. Before I knew it I was in handcuffs.
That debacle led to the loss of my football scholarship. I was devastated. Football was my life. My alcoholism overcame me, and my willpower was useless against it. Fortunately, because of that acknowledgment, combined with faith and time, I've been given my life back.
