 Men of Integrity, May/June 2003
Last Rites
Theme of the Week: Confidence
Sunday May 11 Inspired
Key Bible Verse: If we have hope in Christ only for this life, we are the most miserable people in the world (1 Corinthians 15:19). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:120
In 1982, when he was vice president, George Bush (senior) represented the United States at Leonid Brezhnev's state funeral in the Kremlin. As supreme leader, Brezhnev had established the right of the former Soviet Union to interfere in the affairs of Warsaw Pact countries, and presided over its invasion of Afghanistan.
Bush was deeply moved by a silent protest carried out by Brezhnev's widow. She stood motionless by the coffin until seconds before it was closed. Then, just as the soldiers touched the lid, Brezh-nev's wife performed an act of great courage and hope, a gesture that must rank as one of the most profound acts of civil disobedience ever committed: She reached down and made the sign of the cross on her husband's chest.
There, in the citadel of secular, atheistic power, the wife of the man who had run it all hoped that her husband was wrong. She hoped that there was another life, and that that life was best represented by Jesus who died on the cross, and that the same Jesus might yet have mercy on her husband.
